In detail

Extra Strong in detail

FORMA Extra Strong is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid dermal filler at 26 mg/ml, the highest concentration in the FORMA range. The gel is cross-linked with BDDE and supplied as a single 1 ml pre-filled glass syringe with four 25G needles; the package insert recommends a 25G needle. FORMA dermal fillers are cross-linked hyaluronic acid devices made in Italy and placed on the market by Forma S.R.L.S., under an ISO 13485 quality system and ISO 22716 good manufacturing practice. They are medical devices for administration by qualified medical practitioners only.

Projection is a property of the gel, not of the volume injected. Extra Strong is rated 2 out of 5 for plasticity — the firmest and least adaptive gel of the three. A low-plasticity gel resists deformation by the tissue around it, which is precisely what allows it to project and to hold a defined contour. The same property makes it unsuitable for superficial placement, where a firm gel under thin skin can be seen or felt.

Where it is placed. Extra Strong is intended for the deep dermis and the supraperiosteal plane — against bone rather than within the skin. The indications listed for it are contouring of the face, enhancement of the jawline, and volume in the cheek. These are structural corrections, where the objective is to restore the underlying architecture on which the overlying tissue sits.

Choosing between Light, Strong and Extra Strong. Light sits at 20 mg/ml, plasticity 5/5, in the superficial dermis, with 30G needles. Strong sits at 24 mg/ml, plasticity 3/5, in the mid to deep dermis, with 27G needles. Extra Strong sits at 26 mg/ml, plasticity 2/5, in the deep dermis and supraperiosteal plane, with 25G needles. A practitioner defining a jawline or restoring malar volume is choosing Extra Strong; the same gel in the superficial dermis would be the wrong choice.

Questions we are asked

What is the hyaluronic acid concentration of FORMA Extra Strong?
26 mg/ml, cross-linked with BDDE — the highest of the three FORMA densities.
Which needles are supplied with FORMA Extra Strong?
Four 25G needles per box. The package insert recommends a 25G needle.
At what depth is FORMA Extra Strong placed?
The deep dermis and the supraperiosteal plane.
Which FORMA filler is used for jawline and cheek contouring?
FORMA Extra Strong, at 26 mg/ml and plasticity 2/5, is the density indicated for contouring of the face, the jawline and cheek volume.
Why is a firmer gel not simply better?
Plasticity determines behaviour, not quality. A low-plasticity gel projects and holds contour, which is required against bone and wrong beneath thin skin, where a high-plasticity gel such as FORMA Light is indicated.
Who may use FORMA fillers?
Qualified medical practitioners only. Commercial and regulatory documentation is provided to verified partners through the Request information form.
